Art Exchange is the new awesome

Every once in awhile you decide to throw a party in which the guests attending have to abide by lots of rules. Parties with purpose. Parties with a set theme and structured, timed activities. Which is why we decided to invite over some of our most disciplined and artistic friends for our very first ever Art Exchange.

The idea was based off a series that I had seen at the Wurst Gallery they call their "Vintage Vandals" series, where each artist is asked to find a framed piece of artwork at their local thrift store and manipulate it into a piece of their own.

The (totally strict) rules of our Art Exchange party:

1) Eat our homemade versions of some delicious Cheeseboard pizza recipes. Do not complain that there is no meat and no sauce.

2) Bring one piece of thrift store art to place on the faux fireplace. Prepare yourself to see your boring piece of art transformed.

3) Pick numbers randomly out of a tin. Whoever picks #1 chooses their piece of art to work on. Then continue in numerical order until everyone has a new piece of art to make their own. Don't cry when you get number 11 and have to choose last.

4) Start working quickly with your paints and collages and sharpies and glue to make a masterpiece, because you only have an hour and a half to complete your project.

5) Finish your paintings in the hour and a half you were allotted. Marvel at the creations of your own hands.

6) Take a closer look at some of these gems and wonder how your friends can be so artistic in such a short amount of time. Then draw numbers and take home the piece of art that corresponds to the number that you drew.

7) resist the urge to jump your friends as they leave the house and steal their art because they got the item that you were hoping for. instead, sit on the couch and hold your new works of art looking proud of yourselves.

    best dinner party ever.

California knows how to party. NYC does not. I'm just saying. Keep that in mind when making rash life choices.

wow. this looks fan-tas-tic. I wish I painted or drew or something so that I didn't feel dumb begging to come to the next one.

is anyone going to say that the last supper totally won, or am i the only person who thinks in those terms?

when betsy says "scored" she might also mean "stole"

nate. kylie. katie. tyler. anyone else who wants to come - you wont have to twist my arm to get us to do another one of these (though i still feel sorry for anyone that has to go home with my art)

and cache. the beauty of the last supper is not even done justice in this photo. come to our apt to see the masterpiece in action

This was so much fun. The pizza--don't forget the amazing pizza! Have you finished the left-overs yet? And the "Last Supper" could've used more time/work, honestly. Are we just saying that we like it because we're worried that we're being sacrilegious if we don't? =) Everybody was a winner at this party...

Gosh, how did i spend and evening in your apartment without seeing the stuffed mouse? Remind me next time? At least the "Old Lady" painting finally made it onto The New Awesome. Betsy's two faves. ha.

So I don't personally know Betsy or Rebecca but our friends like both of us so maybe I can come to one of your parties too? I promise to behave myself.

Let me know if you need references.
