Fugly is the new awesome

Dear readers,

Let me tell you a little story about growing up as the girl named Betsy. When other girls were buying little toy California license plates, stickers, and pencils with their names on them, I was sitting at home crying because they just didn't make that stuff with the name 'Betsy' on it. I'd always scan the merchandise hoping and praying in vain but the best they could do was Becky...or Betty. Every now and then my mom would buy me something that said 'Elizabeth' since that's my actual name but it wasn't the same. And it took it's toll on my happiness. I spent most of 1980 with this expression on my face:

Bottom line is I've been waiting my whole life for my name to have some level of cool attached to it...some sort of notoriety...and it finally happened. I know a lot of you probably saw SNL two weeks ago and have been too scared to talk to me about one of the sketches. Maybe you thought I'd feel embarrassed or even angry that the notoriety my name has finally gained came in the form of Fugly Betsy? Trust me, this is like a childhood dream finally come true.

Sincerely,
Betsy

Um. You might be forgetting that Betsy Wetsy doll that came out - you know - the doll whose diapers you had to change, just like a real baby!

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania has Betsy Ross' house. But that's about it for Betsy, sure enough, you've got very little.

    Thanks for the following:

    1) reminders of famous betsy's
    2) congratulating me on my new name fame
    3) reminiding me i wasn't alone (broek you win for "name that was never ever, not ever, no way ever printed on stuff")
    4) not clicking on the link (Jordan, apparently you accidentally forgot to watch the awesome clip I posted)

Kylie wasn't on anything either, however I DID find a tiny, little license plate LAST YEAR that had my name on it, spelled right even. Just you wait, you'll find a license plate some day!

aaron, i love your picture. i lol'ed and my coworkers took note of it. Betsy, i love your picture because it looks more like a little girl hiding a dead bird behind her back than it does an innocent, sad, mini betsy. No one is surprised to discover that you mutilated animals as a child. not oneof us. quit with the license plate sob story. Be honest with your friends. We all love you.

Hmm. I can only cry for you a little... your name is really Elizabeth, but you chose to go by Betsy? Don't blame the people who made the little Honeycomb license plates.
And... "Broek"? Was that a typo on the birth certificate? Or are you like Welsh or something?

guys named "Damian" didn't get off too easy neither ('cept for "the omen" and Michael Damian, which are the same fellow if'n you're askin' me).

hey, how do you pronounce Broek?
    Bro-EK? That is my guess.

its pronounced like you would pronounce Brooke or Brook. But it is much more interesting and has a fun significance.

I'll have you know that your pain Betsy is a pain I know all too well... so this is what it's like when doves cry.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be mean. I think I stumbled over here from the hate blog and forgot where I was.
I think Betsy's a lovely name. Very maternal. My junior high band teacher was named Betsy.

93% of women over age 80 are named betsy or betty.

i like the name betsy. it's a top contender for my first born girl. however, you probably won't read this because you are way to popular to read all 100 comments to your posts

There is no way that 93% of old ladies are named Betsty when at least 75% are named Bess or Bessie. I have yet to meet a Bess my age.

re: "93% of women over age 80 are named betsy or betty."

.....no argumnet with that, guessing 96.4% of women over 80 are named Betsy, Betty OR Agnes...just a stab in the dark

    jordan,

The real show is Ugly Betty.
Fugly Betsy is from a Saturday Night Live sketch.

Now you can order that personalized stuff but not 25 years ago! And it's still not the same as finding it on display.
